  • Weighted Blankets: How They Work and How to Pick One

Weighted blankets have moved from a niche therapy tool to a mainstream sleep accessory. The idea behind them is simple — gentle, even pressure across the body — but choosing one well comes down to weight, fill, and fabric.

    How they work

A weighted blanket applies broad, consistent pressure, often described as deep pressure stimulation. Many people find this sensation calming, similar to the reassuring feeling of a firm hug or being tucked in tightly. For some sleepers it makes it easier to settle down and stay still, reducing the tossing that fragments a night’s rest.

    Choosing the right weight

A common starting point is roughly 8 to 12 percent of your body weight. The goal is a blanket that feels grounding but never restrictive — you should be able to move and get out from under it easily.

    • Prefer the lighter end if you are new to weighted blankets or feel warm easily.
    • Choose the heavier end only if a firmer, more enveloping pressure feels comfortable to you.
    • When in doubt, size down — too heavy is more likely to disturb sleep than too light.

    Fill and fabric matter

    Fill

Most blankets use fine glass beads, which distribute weight evenly and add little bulk, or plastic pellets, which are heavier per volume but can feel lumpier. A quilted, pocketed construction keeps the fill from shifting to one side.

    Temperature

Weight can trap heat, so fabric is key if you sleep warm. Breathable cotton or a moisture-wicking, temperature-smart cover helps the blanket feel cool. Some owners keep two covers — a lighter one for summer and a plush one for winter.

Who might want to skip one

Weighted blankets are not right for everyone. They are generally not recommended for very young children, or for anyone with certain respiratory, circulatory, or mobility conditions that make it hard to move the blanket off. If any of these apply, check with a healthcare professional first.

    Getting used to it

If a full night under the blanket feels like a lot at first, start by using it during quiet time in the evening, then add it to your bed once the pressure feels familiar and comforting.
